By the end of 2015, a total of 60 domestic and foreign airlines had started operations at Hangzhou Airport and the flights from the airport reach 131 destinations, including 94 domestic ones and 37 overseas cities.
On December 18, 2006, Hangzhou Airport started strategic joint venture and cooperation with Hong Kong International Airport, a top global airport, becoming the first wholly joint-venture airport on the Chinese mainland. Since then, Hangzhou Airport has learned and absorbed all the service concepts and management modes of its Hong Kong counterpart.
To achieve further development and improve the comprehensive security capacity of the airport, construction of the second phase kicked off on November 8, 2007. On December 30, 2012, the phase 2 project was put into use, with a newly built second runway, an international terminal building and the second domestic terminal building and supporting facilities. Hangzhou Airport has entered a new stage with two runways, multiple terminals and multiple aprons with highly improved comprehensive security capacity.
In July 2012, China¡¯s State Council, or cabinet, issued a guideline to boost the civil aviation industry, raising the industrial development to a national strategic position. The guideline planned to improve the functions of eight big airports, including Shenyang Airport and Hangzhou Airport, as regional hubs. Hangzhou Airport is the only airport in East China to be included in the list.
